The other day I decided my hair was too long, and had never tried cutting it myself before, so I grabbed some scissors, and started cutting it.  Without any technique or tools, other than the mirror and scissors, I ended up satisfied.  It only took about 10 minutes, it was free, I didn't have to go anywhere, and it was fun!
